So did its Git history, images, links, and generated pages.\n\nBut one durable record still called it a draft.\n\nAfter a deployment rollback and a full synchronization, the system did exactly what it had been designed to do: it trusted that stale record and removed the essay from production.\n\nNothing was lost. Everything was stored. Yet the institution forgot.\n\nThat is the distinction at the heart of the essay. Storage preserves traces. Memory preserves orientation: the context needed to understand what happened, what still matters, and what should happen next.\n\nWe like to call something a “source of truth,” as if authority guarantees accuracy. But a source of truth can still be wrong.
